Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a closed/locked facility?

No, Sana at Stowe is not a locked facility. It is a secure building on a private campus where clients can walk around the property for breaks and fresh air, but are expected to remain on-site and adhere to the program schedule.

Who else will be in treatment with me at your facility? What is their occupancy?

You will be in treatment with other adults (18+) in a co-ed environment. The clientele is typically composed of individuals with private insurance. With a maximum capacity of 30 beds, the community is intimate and supportive, allowing for a high staff-to-client ratio.

Does this program use the 12-steps, or not use the 12-steps? Smart recovery? Celebrate recovery?

The program is primarily evidence-based and therapy-driven. While 12-Step philosophy is not the core of the treatment model, it is incorporated as an optional component. Two on-site 12-Step meetings are offered each week for those who find them beneficial.

What should I bring with me?

Bring comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing for the Vermont climate, along with personal hygiene items and any prescribed medications in their original containers. You may bring reading materials, a journal, and small personal comfort items that help you relax. Electronic devices such as your phone or laptop are allowed but with limited, supervised use during designated times to support your focus on recovery. Pack casual attire suitable for both indoor activities and outdoor recreation, such as walking or fitness sessions. Be sure to include your insurance information, ID, and any necessary paperwork for your stay.

What should I leave at home?

Do not bring any items containing alcohol or illicit substances, including mouthwash or hygiene products with alcohol listed as an ingredient. Smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on campus, so please leave all tobacco, vape pens, and related products at home. Avoid bringing weapons, valuables, or large amounts of cash. Outside food, supplements, or over-the-counter medications are not permitted unless approved in advance by medical staff. To ensure a safe, focused environment for all clients, leave behind any distracting or triggering materials related to substance use or self-harm.

Is smoking/vaping allowed?

No, smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on the campus. Sana at Stowe offers smoking cessation support, including patches, lozenges, and gum, to help clients manage nicotine cravings during their stay.

What is the living situation like? Apartments? Hospital/unit setting? Ranch/cabin? Home-like houses?

The facility is a renovated building that was formerly a hockey school. The living quarters are modern and comfortable, with rooms that feel more like a hotel or a collegiate dorm than a hospital.

Is the program faith-based?

No, the program is clinically focused and not based on any specific faith. However, the staff is supportive of individual spiritual practices and can help accommodate your personal beliefs.

Is Suboxone (MAT) permitted?

Yes, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone is permitted and supported as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Methadone is not offered.

We use a variety of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-Informed Care, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and optional Twelve-Step Facilitation.

How do you treat dual diagnosis?

We treat co-occurring disorders through an integrated approach, addressing both substance use and mental health conditions like anxiety, PTSD, and trauma simultaneously. Our evidence-based therapies are designed to uncover and heal the root causes of both issues.

Do you accept insurance for substance use disorder treatment?

Yes, we are in-network with several major insurance providers, including many BCBS plans, MVP Health Care, United, and UMR. We can also work with most other private insurance plans on an out-of-network basis.

What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment?

Inpatient addiction treatment provides 24/7 care in a structured, residential environment where clients live on-site and receive comprehensive medical, therapeutic, and holistic support each day. It’s ideal for individuals needing intensive supervision, detox, or a safe space away from daily triggers. Outpatient treatment, by contrast, allows clients to live at home while attending therapy sessions on a part-time schedule. Since Sana at Stowe is an inpatient facility, all treatment and recovery activities take place on-site in a fully supported residential setting.

What types of support and aftercare are available once treatment ends?

Upon discharge, Sana staff will reach out to you within 24 hours and at regular intervals after that to see how you are doing. Early recovery can be a challenging time, and it helps to have regular contact with people who know, understand and support you. With your permission, we will also follow up with any providers and loved ones as appropriate.

What will my costs be for treatment?

Costs vary based on insurance coverage. For self-pay clients, the estimated cost is $42,000 for a 4-week stay including detox, or $35,000 for a 4-week stay without detox. We recommend calling for a precise quote.

Do you provide detoxification services?

Yes, we provide medically supervised detoxification and withdrawal management as the first step in our residential treatment program.

What family involvement is included in the treatment process?

Family involvement is facilitated through a dedicated family program held for one and a half days each month. This allows loved ones to visit the facility, learn about addiction, and participate in the healing process.

What substance use disorder treatment programs do you offer?

We offer a comprehensive residential program that includes both medical detoxification and inpatient therapeutic services for adults.

Do you treat co-occurring mental disorders?

Yes, we specialize in treating co-occurring mental health disorders (dual diagnosis) alongside substance use, addressing conditions like anxiety, trauma, and PTSD.

Are there psychiatrists and psychologists on staff?

We have a supervising psychiatrist who consults on cases as needed, but they are not on-site daily. There are no psychologists on staff; therapy is provided by licensed counselors and the medical team consists of nurses and nurse practitioners.

What is the length of a residential stay for substance use disorders?

Our complete residential program is designed for a 30-day stay. This allows for 3-10 days of acute withdrawal and detoxification, followed by full immersion in our clinical programming.

What is the layout of the campus?

Sana sits on 4.25 acres of private, beautifully landscaped wooded area in the Green Mountains of Stowe, Vermont. Just outside our doors are beautiful views, a tennis court, an outdoor swimming pool, a wellness studio with exercise equipment, a serenity walk and nearby hiking trails. The building itself has been newly renovated and designed in collaboration with a leading addiction psychiatrist and award-winning architectural firm specializing in healthcare design with the goal of providing a safe, comfortable environment ideal for those in early recovery.
