Frequently Asked Questions

Program & Treatment

Why choose us? What makes it different than other addiction treatment centers?

Vista Taos is a family-owned center, not a large corporation. This allows for an intimate, 18-bed setting with truly personalized care. Its unique location in enchanting Taos, New Mexico, provides a peaceful environment that supports a holistic, 12-Step based treatment model focused on mind, body, and spirit.

What substance use disorder treatment programs do you offer?

We offer medically supervised detox and an immersive inpatient/residential treatment program. We are also planning to launch an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) soon.

How do you treat dual diagnosis / co-occurring disorders?

We treat dual diagnosis through a fully integrated model. Our clinical team addresses both the substance use disorder and any co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously using evidence-based methods within our residential program.

What types of therapies do you use in your addiction treatment programs?

Our therapies include individual and group therapy, a core 12-Step curriculum, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapies, psychodrama, mindfulness, recreational therapy, yoga, meditation, and massage.

Does this program use the 12-steps, or not use the 12-steps?

Yes, our program is firmly based on the 12-Steps. Clients are required to attend meetings and are supported in getting a sponsor as a core part of their recovery model.

Is the program faith-based?

While not affiliated with any specific religion, our program is 12-Step based, which includes a spiritual component. We offer spiritual guidance to help clients connect with a higher power of their own understanding.

How long has this facility been open?

Vista Taos Renewal Center was founded in 1994 and has been helping individuals find recovery for decades.

Cost & Admission

What will my costs be for treatment?

For self-pay clients, the estimated cost for the 30-day residential program is $24,000. Medical detox is an additional $800 per day. We recommend calling our admissions team for a precise quote based on your needs and insurance coverage.

Do you accept insurance for substance use disorder treatment?

Yes, we accept many major in-network and out-of-network insurance providers, including Presbyterian, United Healthcare, BCBS, Cigna, and TriWest. We do not accept Medicaid.

Do you provide detoxification services?

Yes, we provide medically supervised detoxification services on-site to ensure a safe and comfortable start to your recovery journey.

Is Suboxone (MAT) permitted?

No, our program is abstinence-based and does not permit the use of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) drugs like Suboxone for long-term maintenance.

What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment?

Inpatient treatment at Vista Taos involves living at our facility 24/7 for a structured, immersive program. Outpatient treatment (which we are launching soon) allows clients to live at home while attending scheduled therapy sessions, offering more flexibility but less intensive support.

Daily Life, Rules & Family

How long will I be there?

Our primary residential program has a typical length of stay of 30 days. The duration may vary based on individual clinical needs.

What is the living situation like? Can I get my own room?

The living situation feels like a cozy bed & breakfast. All rooms are semi-private, meaning you will share a room and a private en-suite bathroom with one roommate. Private rooms are not available.

Is this a closed/locked facility?

No, it is an open campus. While clients are not locked in, they are not permitted to leave the property. There is a walking path for client use on the grounds.

Can I use my phone/laptop? Is smoking allowed?

Smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas. However, to help you focus entirely on recovery, personal electronics like cell phones and laptops are not allowed.

What should I bring? What should I leave at home?

Bring: About a week of comfortable clothing (layers recommended), personal toiletries, prescription medications in original bottles, ID, and insurance card.
Leave at home: Electronics (phones, laptops), over-the-counter medications, revealing clothing, outside food/candy, and valuables.

What is the layout of the campus?

The campus feels like a quaint bed and breakfast, not a hospital. It features traditional New Mexico adobe architecture with beautiful mountain views, Taos art on the grounds, quiet meditation spots, and an overall serene, home-like environment.

Who provides care here? Are there psychiatrists on staff?

Care is provided by a dedicated team including master's-level therapists, Physician Assistants (PAs), nurses, and peer support staff. While we do not have psychiatrists on staff, our medical team provides excellent clinical care.

Who will be in treatment with me at your facility? What is their occupancy?

You will be in treatment with a small, co-ed group of adults (18+) from various backgrounds who have private insurance. Our facility has a maximum occupancy of 18 clients, creating an intimate and supportive community.

What is the family involvement and visitation policy?

To ensure clients can fully immerse themselves in the treatment process without outside distractions, we do not offer on-site family visitation.

What kind of aftercare and follow-up support is available?

We provide robust discharge planning to ensure a smooth transition. While we do not currently offer our own IOP or sober living, our team will work with you to find suitable aftercare programs and resources elsewhere to support your continued recovery.
