Frequently Asked Questions

Program & Treatment

Why choose us? What makes it different than other addiction treatment centers?

ACI stands out for its half-century of experience and unwavering commitment to NYC's inner-city population. We specialize in helping individuals facing tough situations (e.g., post-incarceration, low income, mental health issues) succeed. Our Medicaid and sliding-scale model removes financial barriers, ensuring that everyone has access to a dedicated team of professionals and a wide range of evidence-based therapies.

What substance use disorder treatment programs do you offer?

We offer a full continuum of care, including medical detox, residential treatment, and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our basic detox is managed by medical providers on-site; clients needing advanced medical detox (e.g., for severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal) are transferred to a hospital for stabilization before returning.

How do you treat dual diagnosis / co-occurring disorders?

We provide integrated mental health care to address co-occurring disorders simultaneously with addiction. Our multidisciplinary team, which includes psychiatrists and licensed mental health professionals, develops individualized treatment plans to manage conditions like depression, anxiety, and trauma alongside substance use.

What types of therapies do you use in your addiction treatment programs?

Our clinical approach includes a variety of evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Anger Management, and trauma-informed groups like Seeking Safety. We also emphasize Family Therapy and Engagement to heal relationships.

Does this program use the 12-steps?

While our core program is based on clinical, evidence-based therapies, we recognize the value of peer support. We incorporate 12-Step principles and host on-site AA/NA meetings for clients who wish to participate.

Is the program faith-based?

No, our program is not faith-based. It is a clinical program grounded in medical and psychological principles, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds and belief systems.

How long has this facility been open?

ACI has been proudly serving the New York City community and helping individuals on their path to recovery since 1969.

Cost & Admission

What will my costs be for treatment?

ACI is not a private-pay facility. Costs are primarily covered by Medicaid. If you do not have Medicaid, we offer a sliding-scale fee based on your income, and grants may also be available. Our goal is to make treatment accessible regardless of financial situation.

Do you accept insurance for substance use disorder treatment?

Yes, we are a Medicaid facility. Our admissions team can assist you with understanding your benefits and navigating the enrollment process if needed.

Do you provide detoxification services?

Yes, we offer medically supervised detox on-site to ensure a safe and comfortable withdrawal process. This includes medication management and 24/7 monitoring.

Is Suboxone (MAT) permitted?

Yes, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone, is an integral part of our services. Our medical team will assess your needs and determine if MAT is an appropriate component of your recovery plan.

Daily Life, Rules & Family

How long will I be there?

The length of stay is based on individual clinical needs. Typically, detox lasts 5-7 days, and the residential program lasts from 14 to 28 days. Our team will work with you to determine the appropriate duration for your treatment.

What is the living situation like? Can I get my own room?

The living situation is apartment-style, located in an urban setting in Brooklyn. To encourage peer support and accountability, all rooms are shared, typically with two other roommates (three people per room). Private rooms are not available.

Is this a closed/locked facility?

No, it is not a locked facility. However, it is a structured environment, and clients are not permitted to leave the property without authorization. There are scheduled times for outdoor activities, including smoke breaks.

Can I use my phone/laptop? Is smoking allowed?

Yes, smoking and vaping are permitted in designated outdoor areas during scheduled breaks. To help you focus entirely on your recovery, personal electronics like cell phones and laptops are not allowed during your stay.

What should I bring?

Please bring comfortable, casual clothing for about a week, personal hygiene items, and any prescribed medications in their original bottles. You will also need a photo ID and your insurance card. You may bring books, a journal, and a list of important phone numbers.

What should I leave at home?

Please leave all valuables, electronics (cell phones, laptops), weapons, drugs, and alcohol at home. Do not bring clothing that is revealing or has drug/alcohol-related logos. Outside food and drinks are also not permitted.

What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment at this program?

Your journey through ACI's continuum of care will be challenging but transformative, with each phase building on the last. Detox will likely be the most physically and emotionally difficult part—you may experience withdrawal symptoms, intense cravings, discomfort, and raw emotions as your body adjusts, but medical staff will monitor you closely and provide medications to ease the process. As you transition to residential living in their apartment-style setting, you'll begin to experience more structure and routine with daily group therapy, individual counseling, life skills workshops, and peer support that helps you understand the roots of your addiction while building a community with others on similar paths. The apartment setting offers more independence than traditional rehab, preparing you for real-world living while still providing support. Finally, during IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program), you'll feel a mix of freedom and vulnerability as you begin reintegrating into daily life—attending several therapy sessions per week while managing work, family, or other responsibilities. Throughout all phases, expect moments of breakthrough and moments of struggle, deep self-reflection, uncomfortable honesty, and gradual rebuilding of your identity beyond addiction, ultimately emerging with tools, coping strategies, and a support network to sustain your recovery long-term.

Who provides care here? Are there psychiatrists on staff?

Care is provided by a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team. Our staff includes Psychiatrists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Nurse Practitioners, Licensed Mental Health Professionals, Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC), and professionals with lived experience in addiction recovery.

Who else will be in treatment with me?

You will be in a diverse community of co-ed adults (18+) from the New York City area. Our facility has over 100 beds, and our clients primarily use Medicaid or a sliding-scale fee. Many are working to overcome significant life challenges, creating a resilient and supportive peer environment.

What is the family involvement and visitation policy?

Family healing is a crucial part of recovery. While we do not offer on-site family visitation, we provide "Family Therapy and Engagement" sessions to help repair relationships and build a strong, sober support network for when you complete the program.

What kind of aftercare and follow-up support is available?

We provide comprehensive discharge planning with our social workers to ensure a smooth transition. A key part of our aftercare is our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), located at our Manhattan office, which allows for continued therapeutic support as you reintegrate into the community.
