While overwhelmingly positive, a few critical reviews mention that the program's rigid, 12-Step-only approach was not a good fit for their needs. Some past clients have noted issues with administrative communication, particularly after discharge, and a few felt that certain rules were overly strict or inconsistently enforced.

Tip: The program is best suited for individuals who are ready and willing to fully immerse themselves in a traditional 12-Step model.

Is the program faith-based?

Our program is based on the 12-Steps, which are spiritual in nature and encourage a connection with a Higher Power as each individual understands it. We have a chapel on campus, but we are not affiliated with any specific religion.

What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment?

When we first arrive at The Plymouth House in New Hampshire, the journey usually begins with a 5–7 day detox. During this inpatient time, we’re focused entirely on getting our bodies and minds stabilized. We’re under the care of medical professionals who help us manage withdrawal symptoms in a safe and supportive environment. We don’t have to go through this alone—there are nurses and staff checking in on us regularly, making sure we’re as comfortable as possible. The goal here is to clear the substances from our system so that we’re ready to take in what comes next. It can feel tough, but we start to feel small glimmers of clarity and relief as each day passes. Once we complete detox, many of us step into the 28-day residential program. This is where we live on campus, away from outside distractions, and really immerse ourselves in recovery. Our days are structured—we wake up early, share meals together, and spend time in both group and individual therapy. We also take part in 12-Step study, meditation, and recreational activities like hikes and fitness. Living together as a community gives us a chance to build connections with people who understand what we’re going through. We support each other, hold each other accountable, and begin to experience what sober living can actually feel like. By the time we finish the residential program, we’ve gained tools, coping strategies, and a new sense of hope. For those of us who need a little more time and structure before transitioning back home, the 45-day outpatient Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the next step. In this stage, we don’t live on campus, but we spend the majority of each day in treatment. We continue with therapy, groups, and 12-Step work, while also practicing more independence outside of the program. It’s a balance between structured care and learning how to navigate life on our own terms. We still have the support of the Plymouth House community, but we’re also starting to build confidence in handling daily responsibilities. By the end of PHP, we’ve strengthened our foundation and prepared ourselves for the ongoing work of recovery.

Daily Life, Rules & Family

How long will I be there?

Program lengths vary. Typically, detox is 5-7 days, the residential inpatient program lasts for 28 days, and the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is 45 days.

What is the living situation like? Can I get my own room?

The living situation is a campus environment. All rooms are shared with a roommate and are gender-specific. We do not offer private rooms, as peer accountability is a key part of our program.

Is this a closed/locked facility?

No, it is an open campus, not a locked facility. Clients can go outside on the grounds when not in scheduled groups, but they are not permitted to leave the property.

Can I use my phone/laptop? Is smoking allowed?

Smoking of combustible tobacco is permitted in designated outdoor areas; vapes and e-cigarettes are not allowed. Personal electronics like phones and laptops are prohibited and will be stored securely by staff. Clients can use a landline phone twice a week.

What should I bring?

Please bring about a week's worth of comfortable clothing, shoes, toiletries (alcohol-free), medications, ID/insurance cards, a notebook, and stamps. You can also bring photos of loved ones.

What should I leave at home?

Please leave valuables, large sums of cash, electronics (phones, laptops, wifi-enabled iPods), weapons, e-cigarettes/vapes, outside food/drink, and any toiletries containing alcohol at home.

Who provides care here? Are there psychiatrists on staff?

Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team. A psychiatrist oversees the medical program (primarily virtually), but clients will mostly see our on-site Nurse Practitioner for medical needs. The team also includes nurses and licensed counselors.

Who will be in treatment with me? What is the occupancy?

The program is co-ed for adults (18+) from various backgrounds. Our capacity is 6 beds for detox, 30 for residential, and 20 for PHP. You will be in a community of peers with a shared goal of recovery.

What is the family involvement and visitation policy?

Family involvement is encouraged. We offer intervention services, family visiting hours on Sundays, and a family workshop to help educate loved ones on addiction and recovery.

What kind of aftercare and follow-up support is available?

We offer an optional Extended Care Program and a volunteer Monitor Program. Our case managers also help each client create a strategic aftercare plan, which may include referrals to our sister facilities in Maine for IOP and sober living.
